Everyone has heard the saying that a bride must have “something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue”. Traditions play a large role in our society, but where did this and so many other wedding traditions come from?
Why do brides wear a white dress? This tradition started in the Victorian times. There are several explanations some saying Queen Victoria began the tradition of the white wedding dress, While others say that it dates back to the middle ages when Anne of Brittany wore a white wedding dress. It’s said that before the white dress tradition began brides would wear their best dress of any color or a blue dress which represents purity in the christian religion. However it got here today brides wear a traditional white dress that is supposed to represent purity or take a modern approach and wear another shade.
Where did the saying “something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue” come from? Some versions of the saying also add “and a sixpence in her shoe”. The saying began soon after weddings did in the Victorian times. The rhyme was used to help brides remember the components they needed to wear to symbolize a good marriage. Something old represents the brides family and her attachment to them. Something new stands for beginning a new life with her husband. Something borrowed is supposed to come from a happily married woman, this symbolizes the transfer of their happiness into the new marriage. Something blue is a symbol of faithfulness and a long lasting marriage. A sixpence in her shoe represents the bride having wealth throughout her marriage. The catchy rhyme has a deeper meaning than many people realize. Just make sure your ADT Home Security is up to date or all those wedding gifts may be “borrowed” back.
Why are wedding and engagement rings places on the third finger on their left hand? The wedding ring has been places on this finger dating all the way back to the 17th century and possibly before then. The tradition has been around for so long that the finger is commonly known as the “ring finger” The Egyptians believed that their was a vein of love, which ran from the heart to the ring finger, so they placed their wedding rings here to symbolize the love of their marriage. Another explanation comes from the Catholic church where it is said that the groom would place the ring on the brides thumb when saying “in the father”, on the index finger when saying “in the son”, and on the middle finger when saying “and in the holy spirit/ghost”. The ring finger was the next available finger on the brides hand so that’s where the groom placed the ring.
